Carol J. Atkins has been a Certified Clinical Audiologist since 1972.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in Speech Pathology from San Diego State University with additional course work at Northwestern University. She received her Masters of Arts in Audiology at San Francisco State University in 1968. Additional education has included a seminar at University of Connecticut with Dr. Frank Musiek, a seminar at the University of Florida under the direction of Dr. Jay Hall, and has been awards Three ACE awards for completion of continuation education units at conferences. . Her work experience has ranged from doing auditory research at UCLA, instructor of Audiology at Long Beach State University, Whittier College and Cal State Los Angeles, and clinical work in hospital and private settings. She has devoted the past 12 years focusing on providing auditory processing assessments to adults and children.
WORK WITH CHILDREN: Carol’s early work experience with children included supervising master graduate students in providing auditory rehabilitation for children attending the Speech and Hearing Clinic at Cal State University. She also provided a screening program to identify pre-school to high school with hearing loss for over 2000 children attending private and parochial schools when working at Providence Speech and Hearing Center. While working at Children’s Hospital in San Diego, she was responsible for identification, initiating language, and providing hearing instruments to infants and toddlers. There she developed a sub specialty for assessment of children suspected of having auditory processing dysfunction and opened her private practice. WORK WITH ADULTS: Carol has also provided auditory assessments to determine the type and degree of hearing loss for adults. The rehabilitation services provided to adults includes counseling regarding the presence of hearing loss, fitting of hearing instruments, listening therapy and FM systems to enhance complex listening situations. OTHER PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: She has been a volunteer as an audiologist trainer and supervisor for Special Olympics for 8 years. Her experiences with Special Olympics included training a team of specialists in Mexico City in 2000. Carol has provided many presentations about the signs, symptoms, diagnostic methods and therapeutic remediation for auditory processing issues at Chapman College, Directors of Pre-School Conventions, Learning Disabilities Conferences, TACA, and senior groups. She is a member of American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association and American Academy of Audiology. |
